DELAWARE’S 23RD ANNUAL AMISH COUNTRY BIKE TOUR AND
PROCAP PROSTATE CANCER RACE SET FOR SEPTEMBER 12 IN DOVER
DOVER, DE – Registration is now open for Delaware’s 23rd Annual Amish Country Bike Tour, and new this year, PROCAP 25-mile Bike Race. The event will be held on Saturday, September 12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting at Legislative Mall in Dover, Delaware.
The bike tour, suited for all ages and abilities, includes 15, 25, 50, 62 and 100-mile loops through the flatlands of Delaware’s Amish farmlands. Rest stops include the famous Amish School House where members of the Amish community serve home-baked pies and cookies. Several additional food stops will be included, featuring healthy snacks, sandwiches and beverages.
New this year is the competitive race on a separate 25-mile course. The race is sponsored by Bayhealth Medical Center and its staff of physicians, and proceeds from the race will benefit prostate cancer research. The timed race will begin at Legislative Mall and end at Bayhealth Medical Center nearby. Registration includes a free after-race breakfast.
Other new elements of this year’s event include the “Tourism Gives Back Bikes for Kids Campaign.” The Bike Tour Committee is seeking donations of new or gently used bikes for needy children in Kent County. Bicycles can be dropped off at Legislative Mall on the day of the bike tour, or call to make other arrangements, 302-734-4888.
Those participating in the bike tour will be treated to a free after-tour party featuring live music and a catered picnic lunch. Additional activities will also be held on Legislative Mall including demonstrations and yard games.
This year’s bike tour will also feature a Friday night kayaking tour provided by Return to Nature Kayaking. The fee is $25 per person and includes guided tour and use of all equipment including kayaks. To register, call 302-981-1419. Proceeds from this year’s bike tour will benefit the Central Delaware YMCA youth scholarship program, the Amish School House education program and the Bike Tour fund. Donated bicycles will be provided to needy children in Kent County. Proceeds from the bike race will benefit PROCAP, a prostate cancer research organization. All benefactors are non-profit organizations.
