Grass Fed Bison Burgers

Grilling up some healthy (well kind of) food on the grill this summer is not a tough as one thinks. After them Jim Klett race earlier this month we decided to head over to the farmers market in the CVNP and grab some food. One of the items I was specifically looking for was grass fed bison. And we had a winner, 4 patties for $8.00. Into the freezer they went.

We had some company coming over, former Pro Cyclist (and food/health snob) Jim and his wife Cassie so I thought I should get something fun. Out came the Bison. I was trying to find something fun to cook at the grill with the bison and to the internet I went. Tonight's sweet potato recipe was "borrowed" partially from the Food Network.

This meal serves 4 pretty easily.

4 Bison Burgers (or grass fed beef)
1 Purple Onion
1 Green Pepper
Pack of whole wheat buns
Cheese of choice (we used a grass fed garlic and herb)
3 to 4 sweet potatoes
Olive oil and spices
Favorite beer ... I true grill master needs to stay hydrated while near the flames :)

Directions

Hopefully we all know how to grill a burger but the sweet potatoes can be a little tricky. Out first step was to boil them till about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way done and pull them out. At this point we fired up the grill.

Next we sliced the sweet potatoes into 8 long wedges, brushed with olive oil and seasoned with a sea salt and pepper. Next up is to migrate to the grill. I like my burgers pink inside so I actually put on the sweet potatoes first as they will take a little longer. From here on out you are set. I just did the sweet potatoes on each side for about 5 to 6 minutes on the longer burner and made sure I had some good looking grill marks.

Also at this time we threw our onions and peppers on the with a tad of olive oil as well and cook till soft on the top shelf slowly. This will add so much flavor to the burgers you will be amazed.

When I flipped the sweet potatoes is when I put the bison burgers on the grill. Seared them and moved to the top shelf to cook till a beautiful medium (I actually over cooked them). Once I felt they had a minute or two left I added cheese, onions and peppers to the top in that order.

Toast buns and eat up.
