New Balance 1063

The New Balance 1063 is their premiere cushioned neutral training shoe built to log the long miles. New Balance has designed the 1063 to provide the ultimate cushioned performance from heel strike to toe off. Features ABZORB FL midsole technology, an Ortholite insert and their exclusive DTS cushioning system in the heel are the foundation to this shoe.

Whether you’re a fan of New Balance sneakers or not, I think you’re going to want to know about the latest update to their 1063 running shoe. The New Balance 1063 ($125) is considered a high mileage, technical running shoe. Although lightweight (9.5 oz. per shoe), this shoe offers great cushioning and remains flexible. It’s a neutral running shoe, designed for runners who have “normal arches”.

On the bottom, New Balance uses a proprietary N-Durance® rubber compound for maximum outsole durability, and three different versions of their “Abzord” for cushioning, the FL, DTS, and SBS to provide a well rounded system. I experienced some faster and slower runs in these, which led to heel and forefoot strike and the 1063 handled both pretty well.

On the outside, the mesh material that covers the entire sneaker, offers breathability even in the warmest of weather. Even on my longer runs, my feet never overheated, on the treadmill (the little that we ran on one) they seemed to hold up well, although not as cool as on the open road. With such a breathable upper it can be questionable as to if the upper will allow enough support of your foot. New Balance offers the N-Lock system, which is a webbing setup that holds the shoe snugly around the foot. Even after time in the rain or on uneven trails the system never let us down and never seemed to stretch or to give. I always felt my foot was secure and stable.

I had a heck of a time figuring out why the laces kept “twisting” on me. Then I read another review and found out they are called SureLaces, and the wavy design ensures that your laces won’t loosen while you run, who would of guessed that one, and they seemed to work, although I usually double knot my laces anyway.

The New Balance 1063s are great for a neutral runner who desires a well-cushioned shoe. During our months of testing on pavement, crushed limestone and soft root and rock covered trails (never got them muddy) the shoe always felt comfy, performed beyond my expectations and never left me with a blister or anything. It is a shoe I am very happy with; it is holding up well, cushioning is not breaking down and over all an excellent shoe for the neutral runner.

I know this 1063 is on the pricier side, but that’s because it’s top of its class when it comes to neutral running shoes. Speaking of top of the line, $120.00 for a top of the line neutral cushioning shoe is actually on the low side. Most top of the line shoes are falling in this price range, to spend over $120.00 is not out of the ordinary. To buy an American made shoe is out of the ordinary. The 1063 is made in the USA.
