Three weeks out from Ironman I am thinking I want to race on some fast wheels and start looking at Zipps, Heds, etc and go through sticker shock! I only race a few times a year so having race wheels, aero helmet, etc for a small triathlon is kind of silly. Spend all the extra money on race day gear, move up a couple of spots maybe, why? To get a bigger trophy that will just collect more dust and take up more room.
But for Ironman this year in Louisville I wanted to splurge a little. So instead of dropping $1,500 to $2,000 on a set of race wheels to only use a few times, I began to look into renting them. I thought about seeing if a local shop had demo ones you could try out (wasn’t going to tell them I was racing on them) but no one local had that. To the rescue comes Race Day Wheels.
Called them up and arranged a pair of Zipp Tubular 808’s and a front 404 to race on. All for $150.00 bucks I scored this combo with tires, wheels and skewers. I also opted for the insurance for another few dollars I had my insurance.
I also paid to have my wheels shipped to me in advance (I could of picked them up at the race) but wanted to ride on them first. They should arrive on the Tuesday before the race and I can drop them off afterwards. The try and make an appearance at larger races.
Let’s do the math here; you can rent 8 to 13 times before you occur the cost of a set of wheels. If you only need them for a weekend once a year it makes sense. Thinking of buying a set to use more? If you rent from them the rental cost will be deducted from a new set of wheels, if you buy from them.
Something new I am excited about and will let you know after the race how it goes, with the rental and the race!

How do I book my wheels?
Simply go to the rent page and fill out the wheel availability section. We will email you back if we have the wheels you want for the weekend you want. If we don't have your preferred wheel option in stock, we will let you know what we have or what is best for that course.
When do my wheels arrive?
We will ship your wheels for delivery on the Tuesday or Wednesday before your weekend event. You must post the wheels back to us on the following Monday or Tuesday. The wheels arrive in a secure box that can always be flat packed for travel and re-used for the return postal trip.
Shipping?
One-Way shipping in the 48 Continental states via FedEX Ground is included in the rental fee. For $25 extra we can send you a pre printed return FedEx label. Shipping to Hawaii is not free and it cost $65 extra as we use USPS express mail.
What do I need to do once they arrive?
Your wheels will arrive with tires. All you need to do is get your cassette swapped over and put onto your bike. Make sure you allow time for a short ride on the wheels before race day to make check everything is working correctly and you feel confident to break and accelerate on the wheels.
Do I need insurance?
We offer our wheels for rent with or without insurance. Accidents do happen. Crashes and large potholes can come out of nowhere and this is where insurance becomes vital! We highly recommend insurance; otherwise you could be out-of-pocket for the cost of a new wheel or two!
I've thinking of booking tubulars. What happens if I puncture?
We only charge $40 to replace the tire (our cost). Thankfully the days of carrying and changing a spare tubular are gone. You can buy a product called Vittoria PitStop. In the event of a puncture, simply attach the canister onto your value like a CO2 bulb and the tire will inflate to 80PSI along with a Latex goo that seals the puncture. Easy! The canister is small enough to be easily taped under your saddle and out of the wa
