Arriving at the pool for your a.m. workout, you spot a fellow triathlete with an assortment of technical gear at the end of their lane. What is that stuff? Why do they use it? Is it worth your hard-earned dollars? TYR offers three products, perfect for triathletes, that improve technique and strengthen targeted areas.
Using a pull buoy, such as TYR’s Pull Float is an excellent training device for triathletes because it prohibits propulsion from the legs, therefore developing and strengthening the upper body and arms. Place the Pull Float between the legs and try swimming a few hundred yards with it, focusing on balancing your core and rolling completely on your side during each stroke.
TYR offers another product designed to focus on upper-body technique- their version of hand paddles, called the Catch® Paddle. Their extended side-blade design overexaggerates the “catch phase,” or underwater pulling motion, of the stroke, making technique imperfections easier to feel. With a smaller paddle surface area than other hand paddles, the Catch® Paddle also reduces shoulder stress. Incorporate hand paddles into race-pace workouts to perfect technique at faster speeds.
To isolate the legs, try TYR’s StreamLine™ Training Board. Its unique design reduces and relieves unnecessary shoulder stress felt with most other kickboards. The goal of using a kickboard is to generate power through the legs as efficiently as possible. Place your hands on the Streamline™’s foam molded hand-grippers, lean your chest forward, slightly point your toes, and use small, powerful flutter kicks.
These products will improve your technique, put more power behind your stroke, and give you the confidence you need as you splash into the water for the first leg of the race.
