Training for Race Directors

Training for race directors? Race Director University is the First National Certification Program for Race Directors.

The goal and objectives of this program is to help the novice race director understand the tactics and methods used by professional race management agencies. Learning new skills is easier these days with the advent of technology.

The running market is larger today primarily due to cause-related themes, charities and general fundraisers. Sponsorship is something that we all want, and getting a product or financial support helps launch new events. Maintaining a level of sponsorship year-after-year with expectations for delivering the sponsor the analytics that you predicted, for most, goes unfulfilled.

“I often hear aspiring young race directors asking about sponsorship. Putting 500 vitamin samples in your race bag isn’t sponsorship, it’s product promotion. Getting the 500 vitamin samples from a vendor and having that vendor pay for the backdrop at the event, hire a photographer to take pictures, and give your participants a promotional plugger with an ID code so that you can download your digital print is sponsorship,” Evans said.

Race Director University has changed the Level I & II curriculum to help novice race directors choose the best practices for developing their business.

The categories/topics for Level I & II will focus on the following training for race directors:

  • SPORTS MARKETING
  • SPONSORSHIP I
  • RACE MANAGEMENT TOOLS
  • BUSINESS ETHICS FOR RACE DIRECTORS
  • LOGISTICS & OPERATIONS
  • USATF
  • LEGAL LIABILITY
  • RISK MANAGEMENT
  • SUPERVISION OF VOLUNTEERS
  • COMMUNICATION ISSUES
  • GRAPHIC DESIGN
  • PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR RACE DIRECTORS
  • PUBLIC HEALTH

Race Director University has no exams, which takes the pressure off worrying about passing. Instead, there are written essays and individual or group oral presentations of one of the topics distributed on the first day. At the end of training, attendees will gain the essential skills to produce a road race.

Race Directors attendees will also have an opportunity to review the new Real Smart DS platform, developed for special events and sporting events. Additional information about this platform is located at www.smartdigitalscreen.com.

ABOUT RACE DIRECTOR UNIVERSITY

Race Director University is the first national certification program for race directors, established in 2012. Road Race Management is a non-regulated industry. There are no academic degrees offered to signify an individual as a “race director”. These individuals are often present and former runners, coaches and fans who, at best, took their interest and developed a business. While “individuals” per se can’t go out and crate another professional sports enterprise like the NBA, NLB, NFL they can through our support, learn how to develop their business venture, directing races and producing special events in their communities.
